Old Largs Photos and Postcards Quiz

Question 19 Answer

In 1942 during World War 2 Largs became an airport to American built Catalina Flying Boats. The Catalinas would leave from various American locations and fly over the Atlantic and land in the Largs channel. They would then be serviced at the Barrfields Pavilion which acted as a workshop with the putting greens at the front their staging post.

However Largs became an proper International Airport on the 11th July 1945 when Iceland Airways flew a Catalina from Reykjavik in Iceland to Largs. This was the first scheduled passenger fight to take place after the end of the war within all of Europe. Iceland Airways eventually became Icelandair.
