Old Largs Photos and Postcards Quiz

Question 15 Answer

Margaret's Law was the name of a large cairn located near Haylie House. In 1772 the owner of Haylie House James Wilson removed hundreds and possibly thousands of cart loads of stones from the cairn to build dykes. When the stones were removed a burial chamber now called 'Haco's Tomb' was discovered. The tomb dates to around 4000BC and seem to have been used in ritual burials.

It is said that in 1772 two of the compartments contained five skulls each, while during excavations in 1954 parts of two skulls and other bones were found. A flint knife or scraper was also found and a broken brown earthen urn.
